VI GORZYCE WIELKIE CHESS FESTIVAL

On Saturday 8th we launched the VI Gorzyce Wielkie Chess Festival with a Young Talent Tournament. The tournament will be divided into 4 age groups.

The next stage was the Chess Trivia Competition. The contestants were given a series of 8 theoretical questions and 6 photographs of world’s leading chess players to identify. The total number of points to gain in the contest was 14.

The following stage of the contest was Chess Solving Competition  to contestants without an official ELO ranks over 1999. 15 participants received a set of 8 problems with the objective to indicate the best possible move for the white. The total time for solving all chess problems was 20 minutes.

At the end we played Blitz tournament.

On Sunday, the time came to hold Main tournament. The turnout was high with 94 contestants, including many leading chess players from Poland.

 

We will start our report from the Main tournament.

We played 9 rounds with a 10'+5" time control per each contestant. The tournament was submitted to FIDE.

This time, the rivals proved equal with at least several contestants competing for the main prize until the last round. In the end, the tournament was won by FM Jakub Maciejczak (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski), The second place was taken by FM Marek Zakrzewski (ASSz "Lipno" Stęszew) the third by Jan Wojdak (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno), the fourth by k Krzysztof Raczyński (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno) whereas the fifth by last year's winner IM Krzysztof Chojnacki (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno).

FM Jakub Maciejczak is the sixth winner in history of our Festival. FM Marek Zakrzewski is for the third time in a row on the podium!

The next places were taken by Jacek Gradowski 7.0 pkt (RPW Okucia Budowlane Łódź), Sławomir Smagalski 6.5 pkt (TS-R "Hetman" Konin), k Jan Klimkowski 6.5 pkt (UKS "Smecz" Konin), Mikołaj Kowalczuk 6.5 pkt (UKS Skoczek Milicz), the best "10" of the tournament closes FM Kamil Szadkowski 6.5 pkt (UKS "Smecz" Konin).

 

The winner in the women’s classification was k Zuzanna Szeląg (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno). The second place was taken by Ewa Barwińska (KTS Kalisz) and the third by the winner of 2018 Joanna Kupsik (ASSz "Lipno" Stęszew).

In the juniors classifications the winner was  14 years old Jan Wojdak (LKS Chrobry Gniezno).

Jan played a great competition - 3rd place in the general classification, 1st  place in the junior classification and Elo 1801-2000 and 1st  place with the team. Additionally, he gained 74 Elo points! The second place was taken by k Jan Klimkowski (UKS "Smecz" Konin) and the third by Paweł Piekielny (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski).

30 juniors competed the tournament, most of them showed significant ranking increases. The junior group was exceptionally strong this year!

FM Jerzy Kot (UKS "WDA" Lipusz) wins in the classification of 50-year-olds. Mr. Jerzy is in great disposition - he played the highest boards throughout the tournament taking points from the tournament favorites. Together with Marek Zakrzewski, he obtained the highest auxiliary MBuch score in the entire tournament. In addition, he gained 54 Elo points.

It is worth mentioning that on Sunday Mr. Jerzy celebrated his 78th birthday, receiving loud applause from the whole audience!

The second place went to k Paweł Flis (RPW Okucia Budowlane Łódź), Mr. Paweł also played an excellent competition gaining 55 Elo points. Third place took k Witolda Walaszczyka (TS-R "Hetman" Konin). For Mr. Witold it is already the 5th (!!) podium in his fifth start at our Festival.

In the classification of players 70 and older the winner was  FM Jerzy Kot (UKS "WDA" Lipusz), followed by Stanisław Pabiszczak (Ostrów Wielkopolski) and Jerzy Olszewski (GKS Gorzyce Wielkie).

The winner in the foreigners classification was Dmitry Geraschenko (KTS Kalisz) from Ukraine. Dmitry wins this classification for the second time in a row. Second place went to Denys Zamula (KTS Kalisz) also from Ukraine. Although for Denys it was a debut in the classification tournaments, he obtained 5.0 points and took place at the top of the table.

The best player among the host team GKS Gorzyce Wielkie was Arkadiusz Wronka. Followed by Wojciech Biela and Jerzy Olszewski. We can consider the results of our players successful. Jerzy Olszewski took the 3rd place in the classification of 70-year-olds, Jerzy Kątny also finished with high 4th place.

The former representative of Gorzycki Club Karol Maryniak, who played in the Sunday tournament after about ... 20 years break from chess, showed an extraordinary results! Despite such a long break, Karol won several games with much higher and actively playing rivals and took place in the upper half of the table!

It is also worth mentioning that during the Saturday Blitz our representative Przemysław Pieprzka, took an excellent 5th place, but, unfortunately, could not participate in the Sunday tournament.

Our tournament is also open to those who have no other chess category or ELO ranks and who do not participate in chess tournaments or leagues on regular basis but still wish to prove their high chess skills. We welcome such players to join the amateurs classification. In this classification, the winner was Jerzy Świerczyk , who overtook Marcin Jasiak  and Piotr Majchrzak.

They obtained the highest ranking increases – Krzysztof Szymczak (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski) +77, Jan Wojdak (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno)+74, Kamil Grzesiek +68, Karol Grzesiek (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski) +59, k Paweł Flis (RPW Okucia Budowlane Łódź) +55, FM Jerzy Kot (UKS "WDA" Lipusz ) +54, Samuel Kątny (MUKS "Wieża Kórnicka" Kórnik) +53.

 

The tournament was also classified as part of the Grand Prix Wielkopolski. The president and vice-president of the Greater Chess Federation Szymon Pieczewski and Łukasz Magdziak presented the best three with impressive cups.

The tournament ended with a lottery wit six additional awards  :)

 

The tournament was held in a great atmosphere!

 

 

We played with electronic boards on the first ten tables. Thanks to this, the course of the game can be followed live on the internet or on a projector in the game room. We thank Szymon Banach and Mirosław Sobczak from Gniezno for handling the transmission!

 

 

 

The head arbiter was IA Magdalena Judek and deputy Łukasz Dębowiak.

On Saturday, February 8, the Young Talents Tournament was held.


 

In Pre-Schooler tournament Mateusz Soroczynski won for the second time in a row!  Second place for Sebastian Kocerka (KTS Kalisz) and third place for Julia Gustowska (UKS "Dragon" Smolice).

In grup C (2010-2012) as every year, a full-time champion Mateusz Różański won with a set of points. Followed by Adam Jarczyński (UKS "Dragon" Smolice) and Lena Michalska (KSz "LECH-WSUS Poznań").

In group B (2007-2009) wins  Kacper Ugorek (UKS Skoczek Milicz). Second place for Filip Podębski (KTS Kalisz) and third place for Jadwiga Pieczewska (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski).

In group A (2004-2006) with a big advantage wins Kamil Grzesiek. Second place for Ewa Barwińska (KTS Kalisz) and third place for Karol Żyto (RUKS Korona-Rawbud Rawicz).

All children who took part in the tournament received commemorative medals fromdeputy mayor of the Commune of Ostrów Wielkopolski Antoni Hadryś.

The tournament was supervised by arbiter IA Magdalena Judek and deputy Szymon Pieczewski and Marcin Orzechowski.

This year the level was unbelievably high! Agata Szeląg and Jerzy Kot gained full 14 pointsJerzy Kot won in extra round. Also, they obtained very good results 13/14 Mirosław Sobczak (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno), Jarosław Hemmerling (ASSz "Lipno" Stęszew) and Wojciech Biela (GKS Gorzyce Wielkie).

The subsequent stage of the Festival was the Blitz chess tournament, which had 55 players, played 11 rounds.

The winner was FM Jakub Maciejczak (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski) who overtook Szymon Banach (LKS "Chrobry" Gniezno) and then Adam Pera (OTSz Ostrów Wielkopolski), Tomasz Mocny (MMKS "Wieniawa" Leszno) and the representative of the hosts Przemysław Pieprzka (GKS Gorzyce Wielkie).

Women clasiffication won WFM Milena Czerwińska.


The tournament was submitted to FIDE. The head arbiter was IA Magdalena Judek and deputy Łukasz Dębowiak.
